  • Project Highlights: Design called for installation of nine drycoolers installed in two rows, with piping to serve three additional coolers. Initial design required installation of the pipe runs between the two rows which would have obstructed access for future maintenance and repairs. Partnering with the owner and design engineer, an alternative layout was designed, allowing for easier access. The new design called for installation of pipe underneath the units instead of between the rows. The units were raised to accommodate the pipe. The installation was both functional and visually appealing.

  • Project Highlights: Easton Town Center was designed as a leisure center with emphasis on entertainment facilities, restaurants, and nightclubs. The structure is a two-level facility totaling 601,640 SF with two, multi-level parking structures. Project included furnishing and installation of all devices to make a complete building automation system for temperature control including tie-ins to the fire system, smoke evacuation, and building pressurization. Sub-metering of utilities were provided in conjunction with AEP Communcations, which provided Datapult, a communications and energy management package. The project was driven by a demanding schedule with a requirement to complete the project in less than 12 months.

    Schmid Mechanical performed the fabrication and installation of the HVAC duct work, HVAC piping systems and the plumbing systems.

    The project was designed and modeled in REVIT. Schmid Mechanical took the lead in the BIM coordination process, performed all clash detection in NavisWorks and chaired all coordination meetings.

    The hotel is designed to attain both LEED and Green Seal Certifications from the U.S. Green Building Council.

  • Project Highlights: for this new 19,000 SF Tier III data center. The project included a mechanical room with three chilled water pumps, three dry coolers, two generators, two heat pumps and an air handler. In addition to the main HVAC system, two computer rooms required nine Liebert units, each requiring an elaborate control system, with all piping located under the raised computer-room floor.

    A 15,000-gallon, fuel-oil tank was installed in an 18' deep, 40' long and 14' wide hole that was excavated within a few feet of a high voltage transformer in a high water table area during rainy conditions. Despite the extra safety precautions and the complexity of this project, Schmid Mechanical was able to complete the job within the eight-month schedule.

  • Project Description: Demolition and renovation of Sullivant Hall.

  • Project Highlights: Schmid Mechanical performed major HVAC renovation and replacement for Sullivant Hall, with approximately 95% of the project comprising demolition for replacement. The $5.5 million project included rebuilds on three, existing air handlers and reconditioning of two, existing chillers. Schmid Mechanical installed two, new, custom air handlers for the classrooms and art storage spaces of the building, and steam, steam condensate, heating hot water, chilled-water and condenser-water systems throughout the building.

    Due to the age and building configuration (four separate buildings were erected and joined together over 60 years), coordination of installed ductwork, piping systems and penetrations through existing walls, posed unique challenges. Eight-thousand (8,000) feet of pipe was installed.

    The project was a first for the university to recognize the benefits and consent of the use of Kingspan KoolDuct (phenolic board encapsulated with reinforced foil-facing on both sides) throughout project applications, including the roof.

  • Project Description: Replacement of existing chiller, cooling tower and chilled water pumps on the 13th and 14th floors of the Taylor Tower dormitory building at OSU.

  • Project Highlights: As engineer of record for this design-assist project, Schmid Mechanical first performed a 3D scan of the existing mechanical room to create a drawing, serving as the basis for the installation and as a preview for the building owner to see exactly how the new installation would look. Schmid Mechanical performed all of the commissioning and all of the balance and temperature control for the installation, while a third-party engineer, hired by Schmid Mechanical, assisted with the installation and performed the third-party commissioning inspection.

    Prior to installation, Schmid Mechanical demolished the existing piping and equipment. The new cooling tower was shipped in pieces and assembled in place. Cranes were used to lift the cooling tower, chiller and all associated piping. The chiller was carefully rigged, and an existing louvered opening in the side of the building was used to fit the chiller into the mechanical room. The existing cooling tower roof opening was used to fit the new cooling tower into the building.

    The project was completed on-time, despite both a 10-day delay to the project start date and a 10-day delay due to late delivery of the owner-approved chiller.

  • Project Highlights: The secure biocontainment facility is the second built in the U.S. and the first in Ohio. The facility includes two BSL-3 enhanced laboratories and four BSL-3 Ag animal isolation laboratories. All incoming air, exhaust air and ventilation air must pass through various levels of HEPA filtration. All penetrations through floors are welded to stainless steel inserts poured into concrete. Mechanical systems included chillers, boilers, tissue digester, effluent containment systems, welded stainless steel ductwork and piping.

  • Project Highlights: The entire project was completed ahead of schedule through successful field management by the project foreman to drive the schedule for the other trades. The mechanical portion of the project included a new VAV distribution system with Teletrol controls. AHUs were removed from the rooftop while the roof was repaired and then four, new- and three, reused-units were reset.
